Yoshino is a name shared by several distinct Japanese brands and projects, which makes its visual identity history fragmented. The most prominent logo-bearing entity under this name is the regional timber brand YOSHINO, based in Nara Prefecture, Japan, which operates under the project name “YOSHINO, wood & wisdom.”
Design and History
YOSHINO, wood & wisdom is a project established by Tetsuya Sawada, dedicated to designing sustainability for one of Japan’s most historically significant timber-producing regions. Based in Nara, the project repurposes Yoshino cedar that has served for centuries as structural timber into wooden vessels and furniture crafted by skilled artisans.[1]
The brand’s visual identity draws directly from historical lumberyard markings. In a 2024 Co-Design Challenge documented by the Expo 2025 Osaka official website, project members produced a prototype bench whose “simple yet rugged design is derived from the logo ‘Yoshino Chobokujo (lumberyard)’ printed on the wood.”[2] The same report notes that members of the “Society for Living with Yoshino” began redeveloping the Yoshino brand, with the lumberyard logo serving as a direct visual reference point for new product designs.[2]
In a follow-up report, project members gathered and engraved a logo as the final process of their collaboration, with characters reading “Yoshino Lumberyard” engraved on the side of their work.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Yoshino lumberyard logo carries direct regional meaning. Yoshino cedar (Yoshino-sugi) is an enduring symbol of excellence in Japanese forestry, with origins tracing back to ancient times when cedar from areas like Mount Miwa and Kasuga-yama was transplanted into the Yoshino region.[4] The brand’s use of the historical lumberyard mark connects contemporary furniture and vessel design to centuries of regional timber craftsmanship.
