Officine Calabrese was an Italian manufacturer of industrial vehicles based in Bari, founded by Giuseppe Calabrese in 1939. The company became one of Italy’s leading producers in its sector, building trucks, refuse collection vehicles and semi-trailers before declaring bankruptcy in 1999.[1][2]

Design and History

The Officine Calabrese symbol was originally designed by Heinz Waibl in 1963.[3] Waibl, born in Verona in 1931, was a prominent Italian graphic designer who trained under Max Huber and later worked with Massimo Vignelli at Unimark International in Chicago.[4][5] In 1963, Waibl was working as an independent freelance designer in Italy, a period before he joined Unimark in 1967.[4]

The mark is described as a square, rounded logo design.[3] Following the company’s 1999 bankruptcy, the historic Calabrese brand was later acquired by the Bruno group of Avellino, which purchased the former Bari plant at auction in 2021.[1][6]
