Autograph Collection is a portfolio of independent upper-upscale and luxury hotels operated under Marriott International. Launched in November 2009, the collection was created to group distinctive, independently owned properties that retain their own names, logos and identities while benefiting from Marriott’s reservations and loyalty systems.[1]
Design and History
Autograph Collection is described as a “soft brand,” meaning member hotels are grouped together as a collection of properties with their own stories, but each remains unique. Hotels are free to choose their own design direction and operational delivery, with only a few technical standards required.[2] As a result, there is no single visual identity applied across the portfolio. Properties maintain their own names, logos and identities rather than adopting a uniform Marriott-style mark.[3]
The collection’s tagline, “Exactly Like Nothing Else,” reflects its positioning around individually distinctive hotels.[2] The brand’s official website describes it as “a global collection of distinctive independent hotels carefully crafted to leave a lasting imprint.”[4]
Marriott International holds a registered trademark for the word mark “AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION” in stylized form, filed for hotel, restaurant, catering, bar and resort lodging services. The trademark registration notes that color is not claimed as a feature of the mark.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
Because each property in the collection maintains its own independent identity, the visual symbolism associated with Autograph Collection is expressed primarily at the individual hotel level rather than through a single portfolio-wide emblem. Member hotels develop their own logos and brand marks that reflect their specific stories and locations.
For example, when the Hotel Republic in San Diego joined the collection, the silhouette of its rooftop turret formed the hotel’s brand identity.[3] Similarly, the Dorothea Hotel in Budapest, an Autograph Collection property, uses a logo designed specifically for the hotel that reflects the duality present in its brand concepts, combining a traditional mark with contemporary typography and referencing the architectural elements of the building.[6]
In 2016, the collection introduced the “Mark of Craft” concept, which gives each member hotel the opportunity to highlight something local that it does particularly well.[2] This was later formalized as a 2018 global brand standard across the collection’s properties.[7]
Logo Index is an independent educational archive covering logos, visual identities and graphic design history. All trademarks and brand assets remain the property of their respective owners.
