Ramada is a midscale hotel brand founded in 1953 and operated today under Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, with properties worldwide.[1] The brand’s current logo, registered as a trademark in 2006, consists of a red background with “Ramada” in white letters and a stylized red “R” on a white background inside a circle.[2]
Design and History
The original Ramada logo, created in 1953, featured classic circus-style letters.[3] It was revised in the early 1960s, retaining the circus letters but adding the tag line “Luxury for Less.”[3] The logo changed again in the early 1970s with the addition of a bugle boy, dropping the previous tag line.[3] In the 1980s, the circus letters were phased out in favor of block letters.[3]
In 2004 and 2005, Ramada introduced new logos as part of a repositioning program aimed at strengthening the brand’s position as a mid-market competitor.[4] The current red-and-white mark was filed for trademark in September 2004 and registered in June 2006.[5] A separate “Ramada Worldwide” wordmark, featuring “Ramada” in red letters with “Worldwide” in gray, was filed in January 2005 and registered in August 2006.[6]
Ramada’s parent company, Cendant Corporation, spun off its hotel operations to Wyndham Worldwide in 2006.[7] The brand is now presented as “Ramada by Wyndham.”[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current logo’s trademark filing describes the mark as a red background with “Ramada” in white letters and a stylized red “R” on a white background within a circle.[2] The brand name itself derives from a Spanish word for a shaded resting place, adopted by the company in 1959.[8] No official documentation of additional symbolism in the current mark has been published.
