Direct Line Group is the holding company for several UK insurance brands, including Direct Line, Churchill, Privilege, Darwin and Green Flag. The group was formerly known as RBS Insurance, the insurance arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland, before being renamed in 2012. Direct Line Insurance Group Limited was acquired by Aviva plc on 1 July 2025. [1]
Design and History
The Direct Line Group corporate logo was introduced in February 2012, when RBS Insurance rebranded as Direct Line Group. The new identity was created by the design agency Johnson Banks, who had previously worked on the MORE TH>N brand for the same parent company. [2]
The mark consists of a multicoloured ribbon forming a “D” shape, placed beside the words “Direct Line Group” in purple. [3] The ribbon design was described by one design commentator as forming a shape that contains an “invisible” arrow, playing on the group’s name. [4]
The new logo was applied only to the group holding company. The consumer-facing brands within the group, including Direct Line with its classic red telephone symbol, as well as Churchill, Privilege and NIG, kept their existing logos unchanged. [5]
The rebrand came as the Royal Bank of Scotland prepared to separate from its insurance business, which it was required to sell or float under European Union rules tied to its government bailout. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The ribbon motif in the Direct Line Group logo was widely interpreted as a visual pun on the word “line” in the group’s name. [4] The multicoloured ribbon forms the letter “D”, the initial of the group’s name. [3] No official statement from the group or the design agency detailing further symbolic intent has been documented.
