MSIG is the international general insurance brand of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited (MSI), a Japanese insurer formed in October 2001 through a merger of Mitsui Marine & Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Marine & Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. [1] The MSIG brand is used across Asia, Australia, New Zealand and other markets by subsidiaries of MSI within the MS&AD Insurance Group. [2]

Design and History

The MSIG brandmark is shared with its parent company, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, and symbolises the corporate philosophy of the Group. [3] The mark is displayed in two colours identified as Mitsui Red and Sumitomo Blue, reflecting the two companies that merged to form MSI in 2001. [4]

When MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Bhd changed its legal name from Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (Malaysia) Bhd on 1 April 2008, the company explicitly stated that the MSIG logo would remain unchanged, confirming that the brandmark was already in use before that date. [5]

In November 2025, MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings announced that a new brand symbol had been completed for the Mitsui Sumitomo Marine Group, which is scheduled to launch on 1 April 2027. The announcement stated that the current mark would be changed after April 2027, with the new symbol to be used uniformly across domestic and overseas group companies. [6]

Meaning and Symbolism

According to MSIG’s official brand description, the deep blue in the brandmark stands for a long tradition of trust and quality service, while the red element is shaped like the crest of a wave, conveying the promise of growth in its ever-increasing upward sweep. [3] The brandmark also represents the Group’s endeavour to achieve dynamic growth and become one of the world’s leading companies while preserving unshakeable reliability. [7]

An earlier corporate disclosure from Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance described the symbol’s concept in similar terms: the blue portion signifies trust and quality rooted in tradition, while the red portion, shaped like an upward-sweeping wave crest, conveys dynamism and growth toward becoming a number-one company in the new century.
