NCL is the stock ticker symbol commonly used for New China Life Insurance Company Ltd., a major Chinese life insurer founded in 1996 and headquartered in Beijing.[1] The company’s visual identity is known in Chinese as the “方圆” (Fangyuan, meaning “square and circle”) system, a blue emblem that replaced an earlier red-and-blue mark in 2002.[2]

Design and History

New China Life launched its first visual identity, called “碧海红日” (Blue Sea and Red Sun), at its opening ceremony on September 6, 1996.[3] That early mark was meant to convey that life insurance is a business of spreading warmth and dedication, with the red sun rising over a blue sea symbolizing the company’s promising future. The human figure emerging from the red sun was intended to express a people-first operating philosophy.[3]

On September 6, 2002, at the company’s sixth anniversary celebration, New China Life introduced a new visual identity system built around the “方圆” concept.[3] The company’s official history records that the change from the “碧海红日” system to the blue “方圆” system marked the beginning of New China Life’s international branding path.[2] The redesign was driven by the company’s rapid expansion, its move toward international capital markets after 2000, and China’s entry into the WTO in 2001, which pushed the insurer to align its brand image with international standards.[3]

Meaning and Symbolism

The current emblem combines square and circle motifs that interlock and merge, with four corners extending outward.[4] In the company’s “方圆文化” (square-and-circle culture), the square represents rules, regulations and systems, while the circle represents ideas, concepts and wisdom. The two are described as mutually dependent: the square can govern and assist the circle, while the circle never departs from the square and can complement it.[5]

The emblem’s deep sea blue color is described in the company’s own description of the mark as expressing broad, open ambition, with the phrase “本色海蓝,志比鸿鹄” (natural sea blue, ambition matching the swan goose).[4] The official WeChat account of New China Life further explains that “方” (square) stands for rules and law, while “圆” (circle) stands for flexibility and change, symbolizing the company’s broad-mindedness, focus on innovation and expansive development prospects.[6]
