Flask is a Python web framework developed and maintained by the Pallets organization. Its logo, an abstract mark accompanied by the Flask wordmark, is widely recognized in the software development community. The logo is distributed under a dedicated artwork license that permits its use to refer to the Flask project, provided it does not imply endorsement by the project itself.
Design and History
The Flask logo has been part of the project’s identity since at least 2012, when a commit titled “Added logo with new slogan” was made to the Flask repository on GitHub.[1] The logo file is distributed as an SVG, nominally sized at 460 × 180 pixels.[2]
The Flask logo is often misunderstood. Grey Li, a Flask contributor and author, has noted that he spent three consecutive PyCon China talks attempting to clarify common misconceptions about what the Flask logo actually depicts. He admitted that his own earlier understanding, that the logo showed an animal horn used as a powder flask, was itself a misconception that he later replaced with another incorrect interpretation.[3]
The official Flask documentation includes an artwork license that applies specifically to the logo. The license states that the logo or a modified version may be used by anyone to refer to the Flask project, but does not indicate endorsement by the project. It also requests that users link the image to the Flask project page at palletsprojects.com when using it in a medium that supports hyperlinks.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Flask logo has generated considerable discussion regarding its intended subject. Grey Li’s analysis, published in 2021, addresses the question “What exactly is the Flask logo?” and traces the evolution of his own understanding over multiple conference presentations. His research indicates that the logo’s subject matter is not immediately obvious and has been the source of repeated misinterpretation within the Flask community.[3]
Typography and Design
The Flask logo exists in multiple variants, including a wordmark version that pairs the Flask name with the abstract symbol. A dedicated wordmark icon is cataloged in the Devicon icon set, which describes it as representing the brand identity of the Flask web framework.[5] The logo is also available in a dark variant through icon libraries that reproduce the official artwork.[6]
Logo Index is an independent educational archive covering logos, visual identities and graphic design history. All trademarks and brand assets remain the property of their respective owners.
