Reed Smith LLP is a global law firm headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, tracing its origins to 1877 when Philander C. Knox and James H. Reed founded the firm Knox & Reed.[1] The firm operates more than 30 offices across the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia, with over 1,600 lawyers.[1]
Design and History
Reed Smith’s visual identity is a wordmark-style logo featuring the firm’s name in red. The current brand was introduced as part of a comprehensive refresh announced alongside the debut of the firm’s redesigned website. In a December 2025 announcement, Reed Smith’s Global Managing Partner Casey Ryan described the initiative as “the debut of our redesigned website and our refreshed visual brand,” noting that the refreshed identity “reflects the modern, global, and forward-looking character of our firm.”[2]
The refresh was led by Living Group, a brand and digital agency that partnered with Reed Smith to create a revitalized digital experience centered on an updated look and feel. According to Living Group, the project began as a website redesign but expanded into a broader visual brand refresh, bringing “greater cohesion, clarity, and energy to the firm’s digital ecosystem.”[3] The agency described the updated identity as focusing “on clarity, consistency and flexibility,” supporting communication across practices and regions.[4]
The firm’s name itself has evolved over time. Originally founded as Knox & Reed in 1877, the partnership was renamed Reed Smith Shaw & McClay in 1922, a name it retained through the end of the 20th century. The firm was renamed simply Reed Smith in 2000, which its official history describes as “laying the groundwork for a brand soon recognized for global reach.”[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
Reed Smith’s official history emphasizes the firm’s long-standing reputation and its evolution from a Pittsburgh practice representing industrialists such as Carnegie, Frick, Mellon and Westinghouse into a global firm.[1] The firm’s own communications describe the refreshed visual identity as reflecting its “modern, global, and forward-looking character” while remaining “grounded in history.”[2]
The red color used in the Reed Smith wordmark has been documented by brand asset databases. Brandfetch lists the primary brand color as #E41837, described as “Crimson.”[5] No official source has documented a specific symbolic meaning for the red color choice, and no designer attribution for the current mark has been publicly confirmed.
Typography and Design
The Reed Smith logo is a text-based wordmark. Living Group, which led the recent brand refresh, described the updated visual language as “contemporary, confident and distinctly Reed Smith,” with a design focused on “clarity and accessibility.”[3] The agency extended the refreshed visual language across digital templates and key marketing materials to ensure a cohesive presence across touchpoints.[3] Specific typeface details for the wordmark have not been publicly documented by the firm or its agency.
