BlueBolt Networks was a Durham, North Carolina-based software company founded in 1999 that developed online tools for architects and interior designers to review, specify, and order surface materials and fabrics.[1][2] The company’s visual identity was created by the Connecticut design firm Alexander Isley Inc. Designers in 2000.[3]
Design and History
Alexander Isley Inc. was commissioned to introduce BlueBolt Studio, the company’s online product selection and ordering tool, to an audience described by the firm as “skeptical and savvy.”[1] The project team at Alexander Isley Inc. included designers Alexander Isley, Hayley Capidulopo, and Liesl Kaplan.[1]
The BlueBolt Networks symbol was designed at Alexander Isley Inc. in 2000.[3] The work was later included in the collections of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography, the Special Collections Research Center at NC State University Libraries, and the Museum of Design in Zurich.[1]
In November 2003, BlueBolt Networks was acquired by Tectonic Network, a subsidiary of ROI Corporation.[2][4] At the time of the acquisition, BlueBolt kept its name and all eight employees in Durham.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented descriptions of the BlueBolt Networks mark are limited. The logo database LogosBrands identifies the symbol as a square-shaped, block-style mark designed in 2000, but does not provide verified details on its intended symbolism.[3] The company’s name itself combines “blue,” a reference to the color of the mark, with “bolt,” a reference to the lightning-bolt imagery in the logo. No official source from Alexander Isley Inc. or BlueBolt Networks provides a documented explanation of the mark’s meaning beyond its visual form.
