British Tissues was a UK tissue paper manufacturer established in 1966 by a consortium of British paper companies, including Inveresk, Peter Dixon and Son, Wiggins Teape, and Smith and Nephew, through their joint venture Associated Tissues. The company was formed to provide a British source of tissues to compete with American imports.[1] The corporate entity British Tissues Limited was incorporated on 24 July 1969.[2]

Design and History

The British Tissues symbol is documented as having been designed by Kenneth Hollick in 1976.[3] Hollick was a British designer known for corporate identity work in the 1970s, including his 1974 logo for Greater Manchester Transport, which used a distinctive double “M” motif, and a 1975 mark for Derbyshire County Council.[4][5]

The British Tissues logo is described as an outline-style mark incorporating the outline shape of the United Kingdom.[3] This geographic reference directly tied the brand to its British manufacturing origins at a time when the company was competing against American tissue imports in the UK market.[1]

By the late 1980s, British Tissues Ltd was owned by Finnish company Oy Nokia and American firm James River Corporation.[1] The company also produced tissue for UK retail own brands during this period.[1]

Meaning and Symbolism

The logo’s use of the United Kingdom outline served as a direct visual statement of the brand’s British manufacturing identity. This was a meaningful distinction in the 1960s and 1970s UK tissue market, where the company had been explicitly established to provide a domestic alternative to American imports.[1] The outline format also allowed the mark to function as a simple, recognisable symbol on packaging across the company’s product range.
