Eastman Machine Company is a Buffalo, New York-based manufacturer of cloth cutting and spreading machines, founded in 1888 by Canadian inventor George Eastman after he developed the first electric fabric cutting machine.[1] The company was acquired by the Stevenson family in 1898 and has remained family-owned for five generations.[2]

Design and History

In 1961, the British design partnership Fletcher/Forbes, comprising Alan Fletcher and Colin Forbes, created a logo for Eastman Machine.[3] The mark is described as a logotype-picture combining the initials E and M in a rotational, circular arrangement.[3] Fletcher and Forbes were both influential British graphic designers who later co-founded the design firm Pentagram.[4]

The 1961 mark was registered as a trademark in Canada in October 1964, though that registration has since been cancelled.[5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The logo is categorized as a representational, semantic mark built from the company’s initials.[3] The circular, rotational arrangement of the E and M letters is the documented visual feature of the design.[3]
