Heliographia Arts Graphiques was a Swiss printing firm based in Lausanne, active from the 1930s through at least the late 1980s. The company operated as Héliographia S.A., a subsidiary of the cooperative Imprimeries populaires de Lausanne, which was founded in 1916. Héliographia S.A. itself was constituted in 1933.[1] By the late 1950s the firm was also known under the fuller name Arts Graphiques Héliographia S.A.[2]

Design and History

The Heliographia Arts Graphiques symbol was designed by Roger-Virgile Geiser in 1960.[3] Geiser (1923-1994) was a Swiss graphic designer who opened a studio in Lausanne where he specialised in posters, trademarks and logos.[4] He is documented in the Swiss elites database as a graphic designer and professor at ECBA-ERAG.[5]

Geiser’s mark for Héliographia is catalogued among reflection-style logos, a category that describes the visual motif of the symbol.[3] The logo database entry identifies the firm as a printing brand from Switzerland and dates the design to 1960.[3]

Earlier advertising for the firm was handled by other designers. An advertisement for Héliographia S.A., Lausanne, designed by Pierre Monnerat, appeared in the January/February 1957 issue of Graphis magazine.[6] This confirms that the company commissioned professional graphic design work before Geiser created the 1960 mark.

Meaning and Symbolism

The company name derives from heliography, a photographic and printing process, reflecting the firm’s roots in graphic arts and print production. The firm was known for its heliogravure workshop, which was featured in a 1967 television presentation of the Imprimeries populaires.[7] The name Héliographia directly references this technical specialty in reproduction and printing.
