Stella-Meta Filters

Stella-Meta Filters was a British filtration equipment manufacturer formed in 1966 and based at Laverstoke Mill in Whitchurch, Hampshire. A 1972 logo has been attributed to Norwegian graphic designer Tor A. Pettersen of the London studio Lock/Pettersen.

Stella-Meta Filters was a British filtration equipment manufacturer formed in 1966 when the pre-coat filter activities of The Paterson Engineering Co Ltd and the Metafiltration Co Ltd were combined into a new company.[1] The company operated from Laverstoke Mill in Whitchurch, Hampshire, producing filtration systems for water, beer, oils and chemicals.[2]

Design and History

Stella-Meta Filters Limited was incorporated on 30 May 1939 and was dissolved on 8 November 2019 following a members’ voluntary liquidation.[3] The Stella-Meta name continued through reorganisations, with the business eventually becoming part of the Rolwey Group.[2]

Documented visual identity information for Stella-Meta Filters is limited. A 1972 logo has been attributed to Tor A. Pettersen, a Norwegian graphic designer born in January 1940 who worked in London.[4] Pettersen was associated with the London design studio Lock/Pettersen, which was featured in a January/February 1977 issue of Communication Arts magazine profiling notable design studios of the period.[5]

Beyond this attribution, no primary sources documenting the specific visual elements, construction or official usage of the Stella-Meta Filters mark have been located in available research. The company’s later trade literature and directory listings from the 1990s show the name used in standard industrial typography without a distinctive emblem, suggesting the brand operated primarily as a wordmark in its later years.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

No documented symbolism, colour specifications or design rationale for the Stella-Meta Filters logo have been verified from primary sources. The company name itself combines elements from its two predecessor organisations, the Stellar Filter Division of Paterson Engineering and the Metafiltration Co, reflecting the 1966 merger that created the firm.[6]
