Titeflex

Titeflex is a manufacturer of flexible metal and PTFE hose, founded from a 1916 patent in Newark, New Jersey, and now part of Smiths Group's Flex-Tek Division. Designer Lester Beall produced early Titeflex logo work, dated circa 1958, and in 2010 the company unified its divisions under a new logo.

Titeflex is a manufacturer of flexible metal and PTFE hose, with roots dating to a 1916 patent and origins in Newark, New Jersey. The company moved to Springfield, Massachusetts in the early 1950s, and today operates as part of Smiths Group’s Flex-Tek Division, serving aerospace, industrial, commercial and transportation markets. Design and History

The earliest documented Titeflex logo work comes from American modernist designer Lester Beall. The Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) archive lists a logo for Titeflex, described as an “industrial springs” client, dated circa 1958. [3] Beall, a self-taught graphic designer who joined AGI in 1954, was known for corporate identity programs and was an early innovator in developing the design manual as a corporate identity tool. [3]

In 1960, Beall and designer Richard Rogers produced a “Titeflex Trademark, announcement booklet,” a printed piece documenting the trademark. The AIGA Design Archives credits both Beall and Rogers as designers on the booklet, with Rogers also credited as artist. [4] The same year, the pair also produced a Titeflex annual report and a president’s letterhead, envelope and card, indicating a broader identity program. [5] Beall’s papers, held by the Smithsonian, document his logo and packaging designs for major American companies during this period. [6]

A significant rebrand occurred in December 2010, when Titeflex announced a plan to unify its worldwide divisions under a single global brand. The company stated that “a newly developed logo, created to communicate agility and momentum, will be incorporated into all marketing materials worldwide,” alongside “a substantial redesign of the Titeflex brand.” [2] As part of this initiative, Smiths Tubular Systems in Laconia, New Hampshire began doing business as Titeflex Aerospace. [2]

A trademark registration for “TITEFLEX AEROSPACE,” filed in 2012 and owned by Titeflex Commercial, Inc., describes the mark as “the term ‘TITEFLEX’ with a stylized curve on the left and the word ‘AEROSPACE’ below.” [7] An earlier registration from 1995 covers a mark described simply as “a stylized letter ‘T'” for Titeflex Corporation. [8]

Meaning and Symbolism

The 2010 logo was explicitly created “to communicate agility and momentum,” according to the company’s announcement. [2] The stylized curve appearing to the left of the “TITEFLEX” wordmark in the aerospace trademark suggests motion or flow, though no official source confirms this interpretation. [7]

Following the 2019 acquisition of United Flexible by Smiths Group, the aerospace tube businesses were consolidated under the STS Aerospace brand. Titeflex Aerospace, Kreisler, Scotia Technology and Lewis & Saunders now operate under that umbrella within the Flex-Tek Group. [1] The Titeflex name continues in use for the industrial and commercial hose business, now branded Titeflex US Hose. [9]
