The VVB Plast-Elast-Verarbeitung (Vereinigung Volkseigener Betriebe Plast- und Elastverarbeitung) was an industrial association in the German Democratic Republic that coordinated plastics and elastomer processing enterprises. Its logo, designed in 1965 by the German graphic artist Christoph Hülsenberg, is documented as showing a stylized “P” and “E” [1].
Design and History
The VVB Plastverarbeitung was founded with its seat in Halle (Saale) effective 1 May 1958 [2]. Following a merger with the VVB Gummi und Asbest, the organization operated under the name VVB Plast- und Elastverarbeitung (Halle) [3]. In 1979, the Kombinat Plast- und Elastverarbeitung was formed from the VVB [1].
The logo of the VVB was designed by Christoph Hülsenberg in 1965 [4]. Hülsenberg (1941–2012) was a German commercial graphic artist who studied in the late 1950s and worked as a graphic designer at DEWAG-Werbung in Dresden from 1968 to 1975 before becoming a freelance graphic designer [4].
Meaning and Symbolism
The mark is documented as featuring a stylized “P” and “E” [1], corresponding to the first letters of “Plast” and “Elast” in the organization’s name. No further documented symbolism or official color specifications have been verified in available sources.
