Milani & Kobi Werbeagentur was a Swiss advertising agency founded in Bern in 1968 by Alex Milani and Fritz Kobi. The agency began with one client each: Kobi brought Marti-Reisen and Milani brought Tilsiter-Käse. In 1972, the agency expanded into the BSW agency Contexta when Heinz Hersberger joined as a third equal partner. A 2002 report dates the subsequent fusion with Hersberger & Laissue into Contexta AG to 1973. Contexta continues to operate as an owner-managed agency in Bern. [1] [2] [3]
Design and History
The Milani & Kobi logo was designed by Swiss graphic designer Hans Knöpfli in 1969, one year after the agency’s founding. The mark is classified as a logotype built from initials, incorporating the letters M and K. Its construction uses parts of a square as a geometric framework. [4]
Knöpfli was an active logo designer in Switzerland during the 1960s. His documented work from that decade includes marks for the printing company Hans Schaub AG (1962), the confectioner Confiserie Meyer (1963), the art gallery Haudenschild & Laubscher (1966), and the offset printer Gubler (1969). Several of these designs, like the Milani & Kobi mark, are geometric logotypes built from initials and square or circular elements. [5] [6] [7] [8]
The logo was created during the agency’s brief period under the Milani & Kobi name. Following the 1972 expansion to Contexta and the subsequent 1973 merger, the agency adopted the Contexta identity, which it retains today. [1] [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo combines the initials M and K within a square-based geometric construction, a format consistent with Swiss graphic design practice of the late 1960s. No documented account of the mark’s intended symbolism or color specifications has been located. The design’s meaning is limited to what is visually evident: a two-letter monogram for the agency name, Milani & Kobi, arranged within square-derived geometry. [4]
