Design and History

The Otaka Design Production symbol was designed by Takeshi Otaka in 1975.[3] The mark is described as a negative space design incorporating ring, rectangle and square shapes.[3]

Otaka’s broader design career is well documented. He is best known for creating the symbol mark for Expo ’70, the 1970 Osaka World Exposition, which depicted cherry blossom petals representing five continents.[1] He also designed the Cup Noodles packaging for Nissin Foods in 1971, the Kansai International Airport character mark, and the championship medal for the National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament from 1975 to 2000.[1][2]

Otaka died on January 22, 2000, at age 73.[1]

Meaning and Symbolism

The logo database entry identifies the design’s formal characteristics, including its negative space treatment and geometric shapes, but does not attribute a specific symbolic meaning to the mark.[3]
