Editions Hermann, the French publishing house founded in 1876 and specializing in scientific and artistic works, carries a visual identity shaped by one of the twentieth century’s most influential type designers. The Swiss typographer Adrian Frutiger (1928–2015) served as artistic director of the Hermann publishing house between 1957 and 1967, a period during which he was called upon to modernize the image of the house after it was acquired by the bookseller Pierre Berès in 1956.[1]

Design and History

Frutiger’s tenure at Editions Hermann is well documented across multiple biographical sources. The eMuseum database of Swiss cultural heritage records that Frutiger was “künstlerischer Leiter” (artistic director) at Editions Hermann in Paris from 1957 to 1967.[2] A gallery note from Laurel Parker Book confirms this timeline and adds that Berès “called on Frutiger to modernise the image of the house,” a commission that included designing book covers for the publisher’s “L’Esprit et la main” collection.[1]

The publisher’s logotype is attributed to Frutiger with a design date of 1957–1960, according to the logo reference database Logo Nature, which categorizes the mark as a logotype-pictures combination featuring a single letter H with half circles and outlines.[3] A separate entry in the same database records a related logotype for the Libraire Scientifique Hermann, also attributed to Frutiger with the same 1957–60 date range.[4]

Frutiger’s involvement extended beyond printed matter. A blog documenting Parisian shopfronts reports that the Hermann storefront at 6 rue de la Sorbonne, notable for its constructivist style with exposed metal boxes and minimalist rectangular lettering, was attributed to Frutiger. The blog cites the reference work Adrian Frutiger Schriften. Das Gesamtwerk (Birkhäuser, 2009), which lists the Hermann shop sign among Frutiger’s designs from the 1957–1960 period.[5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The logo reference database describes the mark as built around the letter H, the publisher’s initial, combined with half-circle shapes and outlines.[3]

Typography and Design

Frutiger’s broader typographic career provides context for the Hermann identity. He created the Univers typeface, launched in 1957, which became one of the most important typefaces of the second half of the twentieth century.[5] During his years at Hermann, Frutiger was simultaneously working as artistic director at the Paris type foundry Deberny & Peignot from 1958 to 1960.[2] The shopfront lettering attributed to Frutiger used minimalist rectangular letterforms consistent with his functionalist Swiss aesthetic.[5]
