The Information is a subscription-based technology and business journalism publication founded in December 2013 by former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin. The San Francisco-based outlet launched with a no-advertising, subscription-only model, priced at $39 monthly or $399 annually. [1]
Design and History
The Information launched in December 2013 with an original wordmark designed by an independent designer who documented the project on Dribbble. The designer noted that the logo went through extensive iteration before the final result was reached. [2]
In January 2024, The Information unveiled a comprehensive redesign of its website and a new logo. Founder and editor-in-chief Jessica Lessin announced the change in a post titled “Our New Look for the Next Era,” describing it as a reflection of where the organization was heading as it continued to grow its newsroom and invest in strengthening its visual identity. [3]
The 2024 rebrand was led by the design studio Sylvain, which repositioned The Information from a Silicon Valley tech insider into a broader authority on technology’s disruption of business and culture. The studio worked closely with Lessin and reporters across the newsroom, and corroborated the brand’s value through in-depth interviews with subscribers, who described The Information as their “secret weapon” that gave them an “edge.” [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The redesigned logo features a new, sharper “I” with a slash. Lessin explained that the mark demonstrates how The Information gives leaders in tech and finance an edge, “focusing on all of what they need to know and nothing they don’t.” [3]
Sylvain described the new iconic “I” logo and an evolved primary red as elements that “reference the brand’s origins.” The system also includes an expanded secondary color palette for differentiation between programs, along with a new photography, illustration, and graphic language. [4]
Spanish-language coverage of the redesign noted that the new logo’s more defined “I” with a bar symbolizes the publication’s informational precision in the technology and finance sectors. [5]
Typography and Design
The 2024 redesign was not merely a visual facelift. Sylvain described it as needing to symbolize and pave the way for a larger business shift, accommodating sub-brands, introducing a premium tier, and flexing across diverse content formats. The studio’s process involved identifying the core essence of The Information’s DNA through collaboration with the founder and reporters, then validating it through subscriber interviews. [4]
The redesign covered more than 200 pages of the site, anchored by a new homepage featuring two separate feeds: one with latest news and one with the most popular news. [6]
