Transpress VEB Verlag für Verkehrswesen was an East German publishing house founded on 1 January 1960 in Berlin, specializing in engineering literature and periodicals covering land, water and air transport, as well as model railways, model building, numismatics and philately.[1] In 1991, the Paul Pietsch Verlage group acquired the publisher, and in 1996 the operation moved to Stuttgart.[1]

Design and History

The publisher’s signet (logo) was designed in 1960 by Günter Nitzsche, a Berlin-based graphic artist who worked freelance from that year onward. Nitzsche served as artistic advisor to Transpress Verlag für Verkehrswesen Berlin and, in addition to the signet, designed a significant number of book covers for the publisher.[2]

Nitzsche’s design work for Transpress is documented across numerous publications from the 1960s through the 1980s. He is credited with typography and design for titles such as Motor-Jahr 1969 (1969),[3] Seefahrt gestern und heute (1970),[4] and cover designs for technical works such as Eisenbahnbautechnik (1979).[5]

While the signet itself is documented as a 1960 Nitzsche creation, detailed visual descriptions of the mark are not readily available in the research sources. The publisher’s identity was closely tied to its role as the central East German state publisher for transport literature, a function it held from its founding until the political changes of 1990.[1]

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented interpretation of the signet’s symbolism is limited. The mark was created in the founding year of the publisher, 1960, and served as the visual identifier for a state-owned enterprise (VEB, Volkseigener Betrieb) dedicated to transport and communications literature.[2] The German National Library records the publisher under the name “Transpress, VEB Verlag für Verkehrswesen” with the time period 1960 onward, confirming the signet’s creation coincided with the publisher’s establishment.[6]

After the 1991 acquisition by Paul Pietsch Verlage, the publisher continued under the transpress name, now focused on railway literature and model building.[7]
