News18 Urdu is the Urdu-language news channel within India’s Network18 Group, formerly known as ETV Urdu until its rebranding in March 2018. The channel’s current visual identity is part of the broader News18 network branding that was rolled out across Network18’s regional news channels.
Design and History
News18 Urdu was launched on 15 August 2001 as ETV Urdu, India’s first Urdu-language news channel, by media baron Ramoji Rao. On 16 March 2018, the channel was rebranded as News18 Urdu as part of Network18’s completion of its rebranding exercise across all its news channels. The network had acquired the ETV channels in 2014 and subsequently renamed them under the News18 umbrella. Along with the name change, a new logo was introduced for the channel. The rebranding of the regional channels followed earlier rebrands of CNN-IBN to CNN-News18 in 2016 and IBN7 to News18 India in November 2016. [1] [2] [3]
The News18 Urdu logo follows the same visual system used across the News18 network’s regional channels, which were all renamed and given new logos simultaneously in March 2018. The channel operates as part of the Network18 Group, which is owned and operated by Reliance Industries. [1] [2]
Meaning and Symbolism
While specific design intent for the News18 Urdu mark has not been publicly documented, the broader News18 network branding was described in 2007 when TV18 Group was rechristened Network 18. At that time, the company described its new red and white logo as reflecting its brand identity, “a window to an ever-changing world,” and connoting the stature and ambitions of the emerging global media corporation. This description provides context for the red and white color scheme that carries through the News18 network’s channel logos. [4]
Typography and Design
Brandfetch lists the News18 brand color as Alizarin Crimson with hex code #EC2027, which corresponds to the red used across the News18 network’s visual identity. The News18 Urdu logo incorporates the network’s standard wordmark treatment, with the “News18” name rendered in the network’s typographic style alongside the Urdu-language identifier. [5]
