La Gaceta de los Negocios was a Spanish daily newspaper founded in March 1989 by José Antonio Martínez Soler under the masthead La Gaceta de los Negocios.[1] The paper began as a business and economic information daily, later shifting toward a generalist profile before ceasing its print edition in December 2013.[2]

Design and History

The visual identity of La Gaceta de los Negocios was created by Spanish designer José María Cruz Novillo, whose studio produced corporate images for numerous Spanish media outlets including El Mundo, El Economista, Diario 16, COPE and La Gaceta de los Negocios.[3] Cruz Novillo’s own biography lists La Gaceta de los Negocios among the newspapers and institutions for which he designed corporate identities.[4]

The newspaper underwent several documented redesigns during its run. In March 2008, La Gaceta de los Negocios launched a new design that changed the color of its masthead from orange to blue tones, while retaining the salmon color on its business, economy and finance pages.[5] The new masthead was modernized with a blue screen that provided visibility and differentiation, and the format was shortened by one centimeter to create a more compact daily.[6]

In October 2009, after the paper was acquired by the Intereconomía Group, it underwent a more radical transformation. The new version dropped the “de los negocios” suffix from the title but retained it in the masthead, adopting a new layout, different typography and a color palette close to Intereconomía’s existing iconography.[7] The relaunch used two typographic families and aimed for a serious, rigid and strict visual style.[7]

A further design change was announced for October 6, 2014, described as a modernization of the design conceived to facilitate reading and prioritize space for in-depth analysis.[8]

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented symbolism for the La Gaceta de los Negocios masthead is limited. The 2008 redesign was described in trade press as using a blue screen on the masthead to provide “visibility and differentiation,” with the salmon color reserved for business pages as a nod to the paper’s economic journalism tradition.[6] The 2009 Intereconomía-era redesign deliberately aligned the paper’s color palette with the group’s existing brand iconography across its radio and television products.[7]
