The Association of Canadian Distillers, also known as Spirits Canada, is a national trade organization representing the distilled spirits industry in Canada. Founded in 1947, the organization advocates for its members’ interests in policy and trade.[1][2] The organization’s visual identity has undergone at least two distinct phases, with a notable redesign completed in December 2022.[3]

Design and History

The organization’s earlier logo, reportedly designed in 1971, has been attributed to Canadian graphic designer Chris Yaneff, who founded Chris Yaneff Limited in 1956.[4][5] Yaneff’s firm, which operated with Manfred Gotthans as creative director, produced numerous corporate identity marks for Canadian clients during this period.[5] The 1971 mark has been described as a triangle-based design incorporating negative space, though detailed visual documentation of this early emblem is limited.[4]

In 2022, the organization, operating under the Spirits Canada name, commissioned Toronto-based design studio Rayvn to refresh its brand identity. The redesign was prompted by the organization’s view that its existing branding was outdated and needed modernization to resonate with the current marketplace.[2][3] The new brand launched in December 2022.[3]

Meaning and Symbolism

Rayvn’s redesign was informed by the historical significance of Canadian rye whisky, which the studio noted has been produced for over two centuries, predating Canada’s confederation. The new logo incorporates iconography reflecting this heritage, including a copper whisky still, a bottle, a tumbler and rye grains.[2][3] The previous logo featured a martini glass, which the design team noted was inconsistent with the organization’s historical focus on Canadian rye whisky.[2][3]

Typography and Design

Rayvn paired the new logo’s iconography with a customized, elegant typeface and a refined earth-tone colour palette of browns, with gold-foil stamping used on marketing collateral and stationery to reference the gold of rye whisky stills and grain.[2][3] The studio also developed the organization’s website, corporate stationery, social media assets, office wall motifs and exhibition booth materials as part of the rebrand.[3]
