Mikkeli Church, also known as Mikkeli Cathedral (Mikkelin tuomiokirkko), is the main church of the Mikkeli Cathedral Parish (Mikkelin tuomiokirkkoseurakunta) in Mikkeli, Finland. The parish operates as a community of roughly 40,000 members in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, and since 1 January 2013, Mikkeli has had one large parish, the Mikkeli Cathedral Parish.[1]
Design and History
The visual identity associated with Mikkeli Church was created by Finnish graphic designer Kari Piippo (1945-2024). Piippo, who founded his own studio, Design Studio Kari Piippo Oy, in 1987, designed graphic identities for a range of Finnish organizations including the Finnish Medicines Agency, the Ministry of the Environment, the City of Mikkeli, the museums of the City of Mikkeli, and both the Kuopio and Mikkeli Evangelical Lutheran parish unions (seurakuntayhtymä).[2][3]
Piippo’s client relationship with the Mikkeli Evangelical Lutheran parish union is documented in multiple sources, confirming that he produced the graphic identity for the organization that oversees Mikkeli’s churches.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
While Piippo is known for his poster design and illustration work, and his studio produced numerous corporate and community graphic identities, the specific symbolic content of the Mikkeli parish mark is not verifiable from available sources.[2]
Typography and Design
Piippo’s broader design reputation was built on simplicity and clarity in poster art, but no source confirms that these qualities apply specifically to the Mikkeli parish identity.[4]
