Donegal Quartzite is a natural stone product quarried in County Donegal, Ireland, and associated with the McMonagle Stone company, which describes itself as the sole producer and exporter of Donegal Quartzite. The stone is extracted from quarries in the south-west of the county, including sites near Glencolmcille and Granny. [1] [2]
Design and History
The Donegal Quartzite symbol was originally designed by Richard Eckersley in 1978. [3] Eckersley, a British graphic designer born in 1941, worked at the Kilkenny Design Workshops in Ireland during the 1970s, a period that coincided with the creation of this mark. [4] He later became known for experimental typography in book design at the University of Nebraska Press. [4]
The logo is described as an angular design incorporating rectangular and triangular forms with negative space. [3] The mark was created during Eckersley’s tenure at Kilkenny Design Workshops, a state-sponsored design organisation that attracted him back to Ireland in the 1970s. [4]
McMonagle Stone, the company that produces Donegal Quartzite products, was established in the 1970s as a family business. [5] A separate entity, The Donegal Quartzite Company Limited, was registered in Ireland in April 2013, with its principal activity listed as cutting, shaping and finishing of stone. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented interpretation of the logo’s symbolism is limited. [3] The logo dates from a period when Eckersley was producing work characterised by conceptual humour and a distinctive aesthetic at Kilkenny Design Workshops. [4]
