The IW monogram is a minimalist logo mark associated with Studio Boggeri, the influential Milanese graphic design studio founded by Antonio Boggeri in 1933. The mark is credited to Swiss graphic designer Max Schneider, who worked at the studio in Milan during the mid-1950s.

Design and History

Max Schneider was born in Bern in 1932 and completed an apprenticeship in graphic design at Kurt Wirth’s studio before moving to Milan, where he spent two years working at Studio Boggeri, then described as the beating heart of modern Italian graphic design. After his time in Milan, Schneider worked as a layout designer at Graphis magazine until 1957, then joined the advertising department at Swissair, and went freelance in 1960 while continuing to produce work for Swissair and other clients. He later became a partner at the advertising agency Hermann & Schneider for 17 years before establishing his own studio in Hettlingen, Zurich. In 2005 he retired from commercial graphic design to devote himself to painting and iron sculpture. [1]

Studio Boggeri, founded by Antonio Boggeri in Milan in 1933, is recognized as one of the most important design studios in the history of graphic design, connecting Italian and Swiss graphic traditions and bringing modern principles to the field. [2] Schneider is listed among the designers whose projects are documented in the comprehensive volume Lo Studio Boggeri 1933-1981, alongside figures such as Walter Ballmer, Bruno Munari, Bob Noorda, and Albe Steiner. [3]

Schneider’s work at Studio Boggeri is documented in the collection of the eMuseum (the online portal of Swiss museums), which lists him as a designer for Studio Boggeri S.A. in Milan, with works dated 1953-1955. [4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The IW monogram is a simple, interlocking two-letter mark. The design reflects the mid-century shift toward clean, geometric branding that Studio Boggeri helped introduce to Italian commercial graphics. However, the specific client or company for which the IW monogram was created is not documented in the available research sources, and no official record confirms the intended symbolism or the exact date of creation beyond Schneider’s documented period of activity at the studio.
