Laipe is an Italian leather goods manufacturer founded in 1963 by Germano Sciamanna in Tolentino, in the Marche region. The company name derives from the acronym LA.I.PE., short for Lavorazione Italiana PEllami (Italian leather working).[1] Laipe has produced bags, wallets and leather accessories for major fashion houses, and in 2003 the Sciamanna family launched Cromia, its own in-house brand.[2]
Design and History
Documentation of a dedicated Laipe logo is scarce. The company has historically operated as a contract manufacturer, producing leather goods under other brands’ names rather than promoting its own consumer-facing mark. For example, a DeTomaso Mangusta owner’s manual set from the late 1960s includes a Laipe-made leather pouch, but the visible branding on the pouch is the DeTomaso logo, with Laipe’s name appearing only on the exterior box and interior packaging paper.[3]
An unverified claim attributes a Laipe logo to Italian graphic designer Mimmo Castellano in 1971. Castellano was an active designer of corporate marks from 1960 to 2012,[4] and he did design a logo for the leather brand Nazareno Gabrielli in 1971.[5] However, no reliable source confirms that Castellano designed a mark specifically for Laipe, and the company’s early history does not mention such a commission. The attribution should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.
Meaning and Symbolism
The company name itself carries the clearest documented meaning. LA.I.PE. is an acronym for Lavorazione Italiana PEllami, reflecting the firm’s core business of Italian leather processing.[1] Beyond this naming explanation, no official source documents symbolic meaning, color specifications or design intent for a Laipe logo.
Since 2003, Laipe’s public-facing identity has largely been expressed through its Cromia brand rather than through the parent company’s own mark.[2] For readers researching the visual identity of Laipe itself, verifiable information remains limited to the company’s name origin and its role as a manufacturer for other brands.
