Dr. Madaus & Co. was a German pharmaceutical company founded in 1919 in Bonn by physician Dr. Gerhard Madaus and his brothers Friedemund and Hans Madaus. The firm specialized in herbal medicines and moved its headquarters to Cologne in 1947. In 1989, the company was converted from Dr. Madaus GmbH & Co. into a public limited company (Aktiengesellschaft). After several ownership changes, including acquisitions by Rottapharm in 2007 and Meda in 2014, the company joined the Mylan group in 2016. Today, the Madaus brand operates as part of the Viatris group in Germany. [1] [2] [3]
Design and History
Documented visual identity records for Dr. Madaus & Co. are limited, but trademark filings provide some evidence of the company’s branding over time. A trademark for the word “MADAUS” was filed on July 28, 1969, and registered on June 30, 1970, during the period when the company was operating as Dr. Madaus & Co. [4] [5]
In 1969, the company published a commemorative book for its 50th anniversary, titled “50 Jahre Madaus: Eine aufgeschlossene Firma.” The photography book was created by photographer Barbara Schulten and editor Siegfried Leuselhardt and included photomontages, collages, pop-up inserts, and a color fold-out poster of a 1930s advertisement for the firm. [6]
Later trademark filings show the evolution of the Madaus mark. A 1994 filing by Madaus AG for “M MADAUS” was followed by a 2000 filing for “M in Circle with Logo Madaus.” [7] [8]
Meaning and Symbolism
A trademark application filed by Madaus GmbH describes a mark consisting of the word “MADAUS” with a circle around the “M.” The filing specifies that the color green appears in the entirety of the mark, with the wording and circle in green and the background of the circle in white. [9]
Another trademark filing for “MADAUS NATURE AND SCIENCE” describes the word “MADAUS” in a vertical position with the letter “M” encircled, and the wording “Nature and Science” in a horizontal position. [10]
Typography and Design
No documented information is available regarding the specific typography or typeface used in the Dr. Madaus & Co. logo during the 1960s. The trademark records confirm only the general layout of later marks, such as the encircled “M” and the wordmark arrangement, without specifying font details. [9]
