Nothnagle Realtors was a Rochester, New York-based residential real estate brokerage founded in 1948 by John T. Nothnagle, a former Eastman Kodak employee who pioneered the practice of displaying photographs of homes for sale in an office gallery so buyers could preview properties without driving to each one.[1] The company operated under the Nothnagle name for nearly seven decades before being absorbed into the Howard Hanna brand in July 2017.[2]
Design and History
Nothnagle Realtors’ visual identity was retired in July 2017 when the Pittsburgh-based Howard Hanna real estate firm, which had acquired Nothnagle two years earlier, consolidated its brands. All Nothnagle offices and signage were converted to the Howard Hanna name and branding.[2] The decision was driven by a need for a single, unified brand across the combined companies rather than maintaining multiple brands in the marketplace.[3] The transition involved rebranding more than 100 offices across New York state and roughly 13,000 signs.[4]
Earlier in its history, the company had also used the name “The Gallery of Homes” during the 1990s, reflecting its founder’s original photo-gallery concept.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
No official documentation has been located that describes the design intent, symbolism, or color choices of the Nothnagle Realtors logo. The company’s identity was primarily built around the Nothnagle family name, which had become synonymous with innovation in real estate in the Rochester region.[5]
