American Eagle Outfitters is an American apparel and accessories retailer founded in 1977, when the first store opened in Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, Michigan.[1] The company is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[2] Its visual identity has evolved from an intricate emblem featuring an eagle to a streamlined wordmark, with a significant refresh occurring around the brand’s 40th anniversary.
Design and History
The original American Eagle Outfitters logo, used from 1977 to 1985, was a complex composition dominated by the words “American Eagle” in a bold serif typeface. A small eagle in flight appeared below the lettering, accompanied by a banner and a circular sun motif behind the eagle’s wing. The word “Outfitters” was rendered in a script with decorative swirls beneath the eagle.[3]
From 1985 to 2018, the brand used a cleaner, more utilitarian logo in which the eagle became the dominant element. The full company name appeared below in a simpler all-caps serif typeface arranged in two lines. During this period, at least two versions of the logo were used with slightly different typefaces.[3]
In 2018, the logo was significantly redesigned and minimized. The eagle emblem was removed from the primary composition, leaving only uppercase lettering as the brand mark.[3] The company also introduced a compact “AE” icon, typically white letters on a black square, used when a smaller version of the logo is required.[3]
Around the same period, as American Eagle celebrated its 40th anniversary, the brand worked with the design agency Checkland Kindleysides on refreshing its identity. The agency described the mission as evolving the existing visual identity to resonate with Gen Z, moving away from a static, masculine eagle emblem toward a more dynamic expression. The resulting concept, described as “taking flight,” featured an eagle icon that could shift across iterations with vibrant color blocks and varied styles, united by a shared spirit of difference rather than conformity.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Checkland Kindleysides refresh was driven by the insight that the traditional eagle was a static emblem rooted in Americana. The agency’s concept of “taking flight” was intended to embrace endless movement and self-expression, reflecting the creative attitudes of Gen Z and the brand’s more community-focused direction.[4] The agency reported that neurotesting after launch revealed overwhelmingly positive reactions, and the top five selling T-shirts globally featured the revitalized brand mark.[4]
Typography and Design
The 2018 primary wordmark is executed in a medium-weight geometric sans-serif typeface with characters spaced at a noticeable distance from one another.[3] The earlier 1985 to 2018 logo used a simpler all-caps serif typeface for the company name.[3]
