E.Leclerc is a French retail cooperative founded by Édouard Leclerc, who opened his first store in Landerneau, Brittany, in 1949. The brand’s visual identity is built around a circular blue emblem with an orange disc, a composition that has remained recognizably consistent for decades despite a significant modernization in 2012.
Design and History
The E.Leclerc logo traces its origins to the founding of the chain in Landerneau, a connection that remains central to the mark’s identity. The orange circle within the logo is widely documented as representing the “Lune de Landerneau,” a local emblem of the Breton town where Édouard Leclerc opened his first shop in 1949.[1] The moon symbol itself derives from local history: the Rohan family, lords of Landerneau, replaced the sun on their coat of arms with a moon out of deference to Louis XIV, the “Sun King,” and the symbol became an emblem of the town.[2]
For over six decades, the logo saw no major graphic evolution. That changed in 2012, when E.Leclerc introduced a refreshed identity, deployed across all brand materials in November of that year.[3] The redesign was created by the Paris agency Saguez & Partners.[4] The update changed the wordmark from uppercase to lowercase letters, placed the symbol on a white background instead of blue, and lightened the blue tone.[1] The orange circle, the “Lune de Landerneau,” was retained and made more prominent.[3]
According to E.Leclerc representatives at the time of the 2012 launch, the renewed logo became lighter and more transparent through the introduction of white, and the orange shape in its center symbolized the planet, reflecting the brand’s people-centered philosophy. The main blue color also received a brighter shade, and the new typography gave the whole mark a softer character.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The most documented element of the E.Leclerc logo is the orange circle, which represents the “Lune de Landerneau,” a reference to the town where the retailer was founded.[1] The logo’s colors are also tied to Landerneau’s coat of arms, which features blue, white, and gold, colors that translate into the blue, white, and orange of the retailer’s identity.[5] The 2012 redesign added a new layer of meaning, with the orange shape described by the company as symbolizing the planet and placing people at the center of E.Leclerc’s activities.[4]
Typography and Design
The 2012 redesign introduced a lowercase wordmark for “Leclerc,” replacing the previous uppercase lettering. The new name was set in the Eurostile typeface.[3] The initial “E” was separated from the “Leclerc” name by an orange dot, which was described as a symbol of the brand’s digital future.[5] The orange dot harmonized with the enlarged orange circle of the symbol, which expanded to partially conceal the hidden “E” within the logo.[3]
