Hannelore Lüling Verlagsbuchhandlung Erlangen was a small German publishing house and bookshop based in Erlangen, active from the early 1970s through at least 2011. It is best known as the self-publishing outlet for the Arabist and theologian Günter Lüling (1928-2014), who issued his controversial studies on early Islam and pre-Islamic Christian poetry through the press bearing his wife’s name.

Design and History

The publisher’s imprint appears on books dated from 1973 onward, including Günter Lüling’s Abhandlungen zur Christlichen Altarabischen Literatur (1973) and his later works such as Die Wiederentdeckung des Propheten Muhammad (1981) and Der christliche Kult an der vorislamischen Kaaba (1992).[1][2][3] The imprint also published academic works by other authors, including Ursula Weisser’s 1983 habilitation thesis on medieval Arabic-Islamic medicine.[4]

Günter Lüling married Hannelore in 1960, and she became his close collaborator.[5] After being dismissed from the University of Erlangen in 1972, Lüling published his research by his own means, with the Verlagsbuchhandlung Hannelore Lüling serving as the self-publishing vehicle for his scholarship.[5]

Documentation of the publisher’s visual identity is extremely limited. A single logo database entry describes the mark as designed in 1973 by an anonymous designer and categorizes it stylistically as angular, block-style, and square-shaped.[6] No primary source confirming the logo’s appearance, its designer, or the circumstances of its creation has been located. The 1973 date aligns with the earliest known imprint of the press, but this may reflect the founding of the publishing operation rather than a documented design commission.

Meaning and Symbolism

The logo database entry offers only a generic visual categorization and does not provide evidence of intended symbolism.[6]
