Meibundo (明文堂プランナー, Meibundo Planners) is a Japanese bookstore chain headquartered in Toyama Prefecture, operating stores under the name Meibundo Shoten (明文堂書店). The company traces its origins to a small bookstore founded in 1945 in Asahi Town, Toyama Prefecture.[1]
Design and History
Meibundo’s corporate identity is closely associated with Yasaburo Kuwayama (桑山弥三郎, 1938-2017), a Japanese typeface and logo designer who was one of the developers of the kana typeface Typos and authored the influential Trademarks & Symbols book series.[2] Kuwayama published his landmark Trademarks & Symbols volumes in 1973, a period when Japanese graphic design was gaining international recognition through his documentation of logo and symbol systems.[3]
The company underwent several corporate name changes over the decades. It was incorporated as a limited company in May 1977, became a joint-stock company (kabushiki gaisha) in May 1993 under the name Meibundo Shoten, and was renamed Meibundo Planners in May 2011.[1] The company name “Planner” reflects its stated role as a planner or organizer of cultural goods, handling books alongside stationery, movies, music, cafes, and games.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
Kuwayama’s design approach, as demonstrated throughout his published collections of trademarks and logotypes, emphasized stripping a mark down to its essential form. His work for Japanese brands in the 1970s and 1980s, such as the 1980 logo for the book brand “Big Publishing,” shows a consistent preference for clean, typographic solutions that let the name itself carry the visual weight.[5] The Meibundo mark follows this same philosophy of typographic clarity rather than pictorial symbolism.
