Sumitomo Corporation is a Japanese general trading company (sogo shosha) headquartered in Tokyo, and a core member of the Sumitomo Group. Its visual identity is built around the group’s centuries-old igeta mark, a diamond-shaped grid pattern that serves as the shared emblem for Sumitomo Group companies.
Design and History
The igeta is a diamond-shaped grid pattern representing the wooden frame of a well. It was originally used by Riemon Soga as the trademark of Izumiya, the copper-refining and coppersmithing business he established in Kyoto in 1590, to express “izumi” meaning a “spring” in Japanese with the symbol mark of a well. To achieve differentiation from other merchants’ igeta motifs, Sumitomo devised an igeta trademark with unique dimensional proportions in 1913, which is used to this day.[1]
Sumitomo Corporation itself was founded in 1919 as The Osaka North Harbour Company Limited. The company celebrated its 100th anniversary in December 2019, and in connection with that milestone created a new corporate message, “Enriching lives and the world.”[2] The company’s official logo file is hosted on its corporate website under the corporate message section, indicating the wordmark is used in conjunction with the group’s messaging.[3]
Sumitomo Corporation’s brand concept video describes a “renewed brand image” that brings to life a commitment to connecting people and bridging society and the world through symbolic ribbons and scenes of collaboration, conveying the aspirations behind the corporate message “Enriching lives and the world.”[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The igeta mark’s meaning is directly tied to the Sumitomo Group’s origins. The diamond-shaped grid represents the wooden frame of a well, a symbol chosen to express the “spring” in the name of the original Izumiya business.[1] The mark functions as a shared heritage emblem across the Sumitomo Group, linking Sumitomo Corporation to the broader family of Sumitomo companies that trace their roots to the same 1590 Kyoto business.
Typography and Design
Sumitomo Corporation’s current logo is a typographic wordmark featuring the company name. The official logo is distributed as an SVG file from the company’s website, indicating a vector-based, scalable design intended for digital and print applications.[3] No official documentation of the wordmark’s typeface, exact color specifications, or designer attribution was found in the available research.
