Vons is a Southern California and Southern Nevada supermarket banner owned by Albertsons Companies, which also operates the Safeway, Albertsons and Pavilions banners. The chain traces its origins to 1906, when Charles Von der Ahe opened a small grocery store called Von’s Groceteria at the corner of Seventh and Figueroa Streets in downtown Los Angeles.[1] Today the Vons identity is a red wordmark that shares its foundation color palette with the Safeway and Albertsons banners under the same parent company.[2]
Design and History
Documented visual history for the Vons mark is limited, but several distinct eras are traceable. A logo recreation dated to the company’s founding years, circa 1906-1907, was reconstructed from a photograph published in the 2014 book Vons Grocery Company by Michael L. Stark and Wendy Kennedy.[3] A separate mark, labeled as the Vons Companies logo from 1973 onward, has also been cataloged in the same archival project.[3]
In 1985, a version of the Vons wordmark was trademarked, and a vector recreation of that 1985 mark has been preserved in the WikiCorporates archive.[4] A separate trademark filing for the word “VONS” was submitted in April 1985 and registered in January 1986, indicating formal protection of the name during that period.[5]
Vons was acquired by Safeway Inc. in April 1997, after Safeway had already taken a significant stake in the company through a 1988 transaction involving Safeway’s Southern California stores.[1] In 2015, Albertsons acquired Safeway, bringing Vons under the Albertsons Companies umbrella.[6] News coverage of the current banners notes that Vons and Safeway stores share the same bright interior, loyalty program and red logo color, a similarity attributed to both chains operating under the same parent company.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Official brand guidelines for the Albertsons Companies Foundation, which covers the Vons banner, specify a foundation red color identified as Pantone 186 C with CMYK values of 0-91-76-6, RGB values of 228-23-32, and hex code #E41720.[2] The same red is used across the Safeway and Vons foundation identities, with the guidelines listing “VONS RED” as a label for the shared foundation red.[2]
No official documentation has been located that explains a specific symbolic meaning for the Vons wordmark’s red color or its letterforms. The brand guidelines describe the logo as the primary visual representation of the brand and emphasize that altering it in any way weakens its impact and trademark status, but they do not attribute a particular meaning to the design elements.[2]
Typography and Design
The Albertsons Companies Foundation brand guidelines identify Helvetica as the primary typeface for the foundation’s communications, with Arial as the secondary typeface when Helvetica is unavailable.[2] These guidelines apply to the foundation’s printed and digital materials rather than to the Vons storefront wordmark itself, and no source has been located that identifies the specific typeface used in the Vons logo.
Brand asset databases list the Vons brand colors as a crimson tone with hex code #E41720, white, and a maroon tone with hex code #800000.[7] The crimson value matches the foundation red specified in the official brand guidelines.[2]
