Spectris plc is a London-headquartered supplier of precision instrumentation, test equipment and software for technically demanding industrial applications. The company was formerly known as Fairey Group plc and changed its name to Spectris plc in May 2001, following shareholder approval at the annual general meeting. The name change marked the reshaping of the group from its UK aviation and engineering heritage into an international provider of specialist instrumentation and electronic controls. The Spectris name was adopted from the parent company of four instrumentation and controls businesses that Fairey had acquired for £171m in July 2000. The company said the name Spectris had the optical, electrical and global associations it was looking for, and estimated rebranding costs at about £200,000. [1] [2]
Design and History
The current Spectris wordmark is a typographic lockup that places the company name in a clean, evenly weighted sans-serif letterform. The primary brand color is a deep magenta, documented with the hex value #7D2082. [3] The wordmark appears in magenta on light backgrounds and in white or light treatments on dark backgrounds, as shown in the company’s official digital assets. [4]
In 2025, the London design studio Gather documented work on Spectris annual report and brand communications, describing the challenge as creating an impactful brand and visual identity to help Spectris tell its story, initially delivered in the annual report and ultimately across all communications. Gather created a new super-graphic that visualises the moment of precision, described as “where the Spectris world meets our world,” used throughout the report to bring the company’s purpose of “cleaner, healthier, more productive” to life. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
When Fairey Group adopted the Spectris name in 2001, the company stated that the name had the optical, electrical and global associations it was seeking for its reshaped instrumentation and controls business. The chief executive at the time said the new name and identity more appropriately reflected the reshaped group, which had 90% of its business outside the UK. [1] [2]
Typography and Design
The Spectris wordmark uses a clean sans-serif typeface with evenly weighted letterforms. The design relies on the brand name itself as the central element of the identity, with no separate icon or symbol accompanying the wordmark in the primary lockup. [4] The magenta brand color #7D2082 is the dominant hue in the identity system. [3]
