FRISK Software International was an Icelandic software company, founded in 1993 in Reykjavík, that developed the F-Prot antivirus and F-Prot AVES antivirus and anti-spam services.[1] The company’s name derives from the initial letters of the personal name and patronymic of its founder, Friðrik Skúlason.[1] In 2012, FRISK was acquired by Cyren, an Israeli-American provider of security products.[2]
Design and History
The FRISK corporate logo is a wordmark that spells out “FRISK” in a straightforward, all-caps letterform.[2] The mark was used as the company’s primary identifier alongside its product branding. The company also maintained a separate logo for its flagship product, F-Prot Antivirus, which was stylized as “F-PROT” and used across product packaging and marketing materials.[2]
F-Prot Antivirus was first released in 1989, before the company itself was formally established in 1993, making it one of the longest-lived antivirus brands on the market.[2] The product reached end-of-life on July 31, 2021, and is no longer sold.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The FRISK name itself carries the documented meaning behind the brand identity. It is an acronym formed from the initial letters of founder Friðrik Skúlason’s personal name and patronymic: “Fri” from Friðrik and “Sk” from Skúlason.[1] This naming convention ties the corporate identity directly to its founder, who originally developed F-Prot Antivirus and served as head of the company until the 2012 acquisition by Cyren.[2]
