Sumo Logic, Inc. is a cloud-native SaaS platform for SIEM, security analytics, and observability, founded in 2010 and headquartered in Redwood City, California.[1] The company went public on NASDAQ in September 2020 under the ticker symbol SUMO[2] and was later acquired by Francisco Partners in May 2023 for $1.7 billion.[3]
Design and History
Sumo Logic’s brand identity was developed by the San Francisco design agency Tolleson. The agency worked with Sumo Logic leadership, including CEO Ramin Sayar and founders Christian Beedgen and Bruno Kurtic, to define a new company purpose, messaging framework, and visual identity system as the company expanded into the enterprise market.[4]
According to Tolleson, Sumo Logic’s brand was “beloved internally and named after its founder’s dog” but had “outgrown its startup roots and needed a major refresh to compete in the broader enterprise market.”[5] The agency developed a comprehensive brand system, including a unique icon system, logo treatments, data visualizations, and brand guidelines.[4]
The company name references sumo wrestling, and Tolleson’s work addressed what it described as Sumo Logic’s “beloved yet problematic tribute to sumo wrestlers.” The agency explored mascot concepts that would “steer clear of cultural appropriation,” ultimately developing a character called Mobot designed to bridge “the worlds of sumo and data security” while remaining free of gender or racial markers.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Sumo Logic name itself is the primary source of brand meaning. Tolleson notes that the company wanted to “return to the roots of their beloved brand” and “leverage the Sumo name more effectively” under new leadership.[6] The brand’s sumo reference was central enough that the agency’s character development work focused on creating a mascot that honored the name while avoiding cultural appropriation.[6]
Sumo Logic’s official trademark page lists “Sumo Logic®” as a registered trademark of the company.[7] A separate trademark registration for the word mark “SUMO LOGIC” in stylized font was filed in 2018, with color not claimed as a feature of the mark.[8]
Typography and Design
Sumo Logic’s current logo uses a square icon format, referenced in the company’s own documentation as “sumo-square.png” with the alt text “Sumo Logic logo.”[9] The icon is also available in the Simple Icons open-source collection, which provides a standardized SVG rendering of the mark.[10]
An earlier trademark filing from 2018 describes a word mark consisting of the letters “SUMO” where “S” and “U” are positioned over “M” and “O,” indicating a stacked two-line wordmark format was used in earlier branding.[11]
