Royal Antwerp Football Club, commonly known as Antwerp FC or RAFC, is a Belgian professional football club based in Antwerp. Founded in 1880 by a group of English workers under the name Antwerp Athletic Club, the club is recognized as Belgium’s oldest football club and holds matriculation number 1 with the Royal Belgian Football Association.[1]
Design and History
In November 2015, Royal Antwerp FC launched its first official, uniform club logo since its founding in 1880.[2] The club had previously used six different logos, with the last one introduced in 1957. That version varied in colors, letter type, and the shape of the crown, and was not applied consistently.[3]
For the 2015 restoration, club staff researched the club archive and recovered the original Antwerp crown from the 1920s. The crown at the top of the coat of arms was restored to its original form.[2][3] The club kept the changes subtle, preserving the overall design while standardizing it.[2]
The restored 2015 logo integrates the letter type of the authentic house style. The number “1” remains clearly visible at the bottom in black paint, and “1880” was added at the bottom to highlight the club’s founding year and its status as the oldest club in the country.[3]
The research that led to the logo restoration also prompted the club to formally register the RAFC brand. Club staff collected elements representing Antwerp’s authenticity and image, and the results were compiled in the “Royal Antwerp Brand Bible,” a document intended to support the club’s further professionalization.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s official history notes that Royal Antwerp FC was founded in 1880 by a group of English workers, at a time when football was far less popular on the European continent than across the Channel. Under the name Antwerp Athletic Club, members practiced cricket, tennis, and rugby alongside football.[1]
The club received the royal title in 1920, after which it became known as Royal Antwerp FC.[5] The crown element in the crest reflects this royal designation, with the original crown from the 1920s recovered from the club archive for the 2015 restoration.[3]
Typography and Design
The 2015 logo restoration integrated the letter type of the club’s authentic house style, drawn from the club’s historical identity.[3] The number “1” appears at the bottom of the crest in black, and “1880” was added beneath it to reference the founding year.[3]
