The Charlotte Checkers are an American Hockey League (AHL) franchise based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The team’s visual identity has centered on a polar bear mascot since the original ECHL incarnation of the club debuted in 1993, a motif that has carried through multiple league changes and affiliation shifts.
Design and History
The first Charlotte Checkers logo was created in 1993 and remained with the team for nearly a decade. It featured a cartoon polar bear wearing a hockey helmet and blue uniform inside a checkered circle, a direct visual pun on the team’s name.[1]
The ECHL franchise underwent a full rebranding before the 2007-08 season, adopting the polar bear head logo that would become the foundation of the current identity. The redesigned bear appeared more aggressive and was placed on a solid red circle with a black outline.[2]
In 2010, the Albany River Rats of the AHL relocated to Charlotte and assumed the branding of the ECHL’s Checkers franchise. The move was made to place the club closer to its NHL parent team, the Carolina Hurricanes.[3] The relocated team kept the existing Checkers logo but changed the colors, replacing the blue of the original mark with black to match the Hurricanes’ palette of red, black, white and silver.[4]
Alongside the color change, the team unveiled a new alternate logo for its black third jersey. The mark combined elements of both franchises’ identities, depicting the polar bear mascot carrying a hockey stick with a tropical storm warning flag, a reference to the Hurricanes’ branding.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current primary logo features a growling polar bear head facing right inside a kite-like shape with a double border. The bear’s nose and mouth extend outside the shape’s boundaries. A city skyline sits above the bear, and the full team name appears underneath in a banner covering the bottom of the kite shape.[6]
The polar bear motif has been a consistent element of the Checkers identity since 1993, while the Charlotte skyline grounds the mark in its home city. The team’s colors are red, black, silver and white.[7]
In September 2025, the Checkers unveiled new uniforms modeled after those of their current NHL affiliate, the Florida Panthers, whom they have been affiliated with since 2020. The jerseys retained the team’s primary polar bear logo on the chest while adding black-and-white Panthers logos on the shoulders.[7]
