The Coastal Athletic Association, known as the CAA, is an NCAA Division I conference headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. The conference was known as the Colonial Athletic Association from 1985 until July 2023, when it changed its name to the Coastal Athletic Association while retaining the CAA acronym and the same conference logo.[1]
Design and History
The conference traces its roots to 1983 as the ECAC South basketball league, transforming into the Colonial Athletic Association on June 6, 1985.[2]
In August 2013, the CAA released a new conference logo. The design featured the recognizable block letters that had been used on uniforms, fields and courts around the CAA for many years, but provided a cleaner, refreshed look. The league kept its navy blue and gold color scheme with the update.[3]
On July 20, 2023, the conference announced it had changed its name from the Colonial Athletic Association to the Coastal Athletic Association. The league stated it would continue to be referred to as the CAA and would continue to use the same conference logo. The new name reflected the CAA’s recent expansion, with members spanning the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to South Carolina.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2023 name change was described by Commissioner Joe D’Antonio as reflective of the conference’s continuity and unity, as well as each institution’s commitment to be “United in Excellence.” The new name was chosen to reflect the conference’s expanded geographic footprint along the Atlantic Coast.[1]
Typography and Design
The CAA’s official logo colors are PMS 281, PMS 660 and Cool Grey 9, with corresponding CMYK and RGB values published by the conference.[4] The conference’s official font family is Lato, as specified in its branding materials.[5]
