Crewe Alexandra

Crewe Alexandra Football Club is an English club nicknamed The Railwaymen, formed in 1877. Its earliest documented shirt crest dates to the 1949-51 seasons, and a new crest was introduced for 1994-95.

Crewe Alexandra Football Club, the English club nicknamed “The Railwaymen,” has a visual identity rooted in the town’s railway heritage and the heraldry of the local Crewe family. The club was formed in 1877 as an offshoot of the local cricket club and was named for the Alexandra public house, which provided its first base; the pub itself was named for Princess Alexandra, one of Queen Victoria’s daughters.[1]

Design and History

The club’s earliest documented crest use on shirts dates to the 1949-51 seasons, when a crest was added that was likely the official club emblem dating from the 1880s.[1] The town’s own crest appeared on shirts in the 1958-59 season.[1]

In 1975, the club adopted a crest that remained in use for the next 20 years. It featured a football surrounded by the club’s name on a circular disc, surmounted by a lion holding a locomotive wheel, a motif borrowed from British Railways that celebrated the town’s association with the railways.[1]

A new crest was introduced for the 1994-95 season. The lion motif was retained but now held a football rather than a locomotive wheel. This crest normally appeared on a white lozenge but was also stitched directly onto the shirt without any background, in which case the text was typically embroidered in gold.[2] In 2017, the 1995 version of the team crest was revived.[1]

In August 2026, as part of a promotional campaign marking Compare the Market becoming an official partner of the English Football League, the club was temporarily renamed “Crewe Aleksandr” for the opening week of the 2026/27 season. The temporary rebrand included a new sign at the club’s Mornflake Stadium featuring the Compare the Market meerkat character Aleksandr in the centre of the badge.[3]

Meaning and Symbolism

The lion in the club’s badge derives from the coat of arms of the Crewe family, historic landowners of Cheshire seated at Crewe Hall.[4] The town of Crewe’s own coat of arms, officially granted on March 18, 1955, features a crest formed by the white lion of the Crewe family, with red claws and tongue, holding a golden cog wheel which typifies the engineering industry. The wheel is symbolic of the railway industry, and its six spokes represent the six lines radiating from Crewe station.[5]

For decades, the club badge carried a white lion gripping a six-spoked wheel, with each spoke symbolising one of the six main train lines that converged at Crewe station.[4] The six-spoked wheel was dropped in a later modernisation of the badge.[4]
