The Drummondville Voltigeurs are a Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) franchise based in Drummondville, Quebec, that began play in the 1982-83 season. The team’s visual identity has drawn consistently on its military namesake, the Voltigeurs regiment that founded Drummondville in 1815, with a soldier figure and bayonet imagery appearing across successive marks.
Design and History
Since the club’s founding in 1982, the Voltigeurs have worn four different logos. The current primary version dates to 2004, with some modifications made to the jersey in 2016. The mark depicts a soldier in red holding a bayonet, with a black “V” in the background. The team’s colors are red, black and white, with silver also listed among the franchise’s official colors. In September 2011, the team unveiled a new alternate jersey described as sober and classic, black with white and silver tones. The jersey introduced a new secondary logo: a bayonet bearing the letter “D”. The bayonet referenced the weapon held by the soldier on the then-current jersey, while the “D” recalled both the city’s name and the first logo in club history. [4]
For the 2016-17 season, the club introduced a retro-styled jersey for its 35th anniversary. The organization kept the logo it had worn for the previous 11 years, which team officials described as “our proud and warrior Voltigeur”. The new uniform incorporated design lines evoking the four previous team uniforms, along with a 35th anniversary shoulder patch. [5]
In June 2021, the Voltigeurs unveiled a commemorative logo for the franchise’s 40th anniversary, used throughout the 2021-22 season including as a patch on official jerseys. The design was inspired by the team’s second logo, worn between 1987 and 1994, combined with a modification of the current logo. Graphic designer Yanick Ledoux of the firm IGREK contributed to the creation of the anniversary mark. [6] [7]
In 2020, the Montreal agency Roberge design & branding approached the team with an unsolicited logo proposal depicting a soldier holding a flaming torch, with the team name below and the traditional “V” moved to the jersey shoulders. The Voltigeurs declined the offer. Team president Éric Verrier told L’Express that the image resembled “a Patriot, not a Voltigeur”, and that a logo change was not part of the organization’s short-term plans. [1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The soldier figure on the current logo refers to the regiment of Voltigeurs, the military unit that founded the colony of Drummondville in 1815. When asked in 2020 whether the rifle visible on the logo might be removed amid broader conversations about violent imagery in sports branding, Verrier defended the element as historical: “This image is historic: it relates to a soldier of the Voltigeurs regiment. It’s not a farmer or an accountant on our jersey, it’s a soldier.” [1]
