Flamengo Basketball, also known as FlaBasquete, is the basketball department of the Brazilian multi-sport club Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, based in Rio de Janeiro. The team does not maintain a separate crest of its own. Instead, it uses the club’s official land sports shield, the same escudo applied across Flamengo’s terrestrial sports, including football and volleyball. The club’s official colors are red and black, with white also listed among the basketball team’s colors. [1] [2]
Design and History
Flamengo’s land sports shield dates to 1920, when club members approved a new escudo for the club’s social representation, which was also adopted by the terrestrial sports section. A contemporary newspaper description from January 1921 recorded the design as a heraldic shield of ogival form, its field divided into eight horizontal stripes, four black and four red, alternating and equidistant. In the upper left corner sat a rectangle spanning the height of the first three stripes, bearing the interlaced white letters CRF. [3]
That basic composition has endured, with later changes described as modernization rather than reinvention. In April 2018, the club officially presented a redesign of its symbols, including the CRF monogram, the aquatic sports crest, and the land sports crest. The project was led by designer Fabio Lopez, with assistance from Eduardo Franco, then a designer at the club. The work began in mid-2017 and was completed with the creation of a brand manual. [4] [5]
Lopez described the challenge as defining how far to advance without mischaracterizing symbols in use, noting that tradition and history are highly valued in the football environment while the club sought to modernize its management and present itself more dynamically. On the land sports shield specifically, the work involved correcting details of colors and contours. [5] [6]
A notable basketball-specific identity change came in 2022. After Flamengo won its second FIBA Intercontinental Cup, the club’s Deliberative Council approved the addition of a second star near the shield on the basketball uniforms, referencing the intercontinental titles won in 2014 and 2022. The new jersey featuring the shield with two stars was presented later that year. [7] [8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The shield’s red and black stripes and the interlaced CRF monogram are the club’s identifying marks, documented since the 1920 design. The original aquatic sports escudo, created for rowing, displayed a central anchor with two crossed oars and the letters C, R, and F, reflecting the club’s founding purpose. The land sports shield was adopted separately after football joined the club in 1911 and the rowing section did not permit the new sport to use the same uniform and shield. [3] [9]
Typography and Design
The letters CRF inside the shield’s upper left rectangle are interlaced, a feature described in the original 1921 published account of the escudo. The 2018 redesign treated the monogram as the project’s starting point, with Lopez noting that its interlaced construction made any adjustment a delicate task. [3] [5]
