Fortuna Sittard is a Dutch professional football club based in Sittard, Limburg, formed on 1 July 1968 through the merger of Fortuna ’54 and Sittardia, which combined as the Fortuna Sittardia Combinatie.[1] The club’s visual identity is built around the figure of Fortuna, the Roman goddess of fortune and prosperity, who also gives the club its name.[2]
Design and History
The current Fortuna Sittard crest is a teardrop-shaped badge with sweeping green and yellow bands framing a white female figure in flowing robes, her hair streaming behind her. She leans on a large black-and-white football, with a green wheel in the background, and the text “FORTUNA SITTARD” appears on a curved white ribbon below.[3] The figure represents the Roman goddess Fortuna, namesake of the club, traditionally depicted with a cornucopia and the Wheel of Fortune.[3]
According to crest history documentation, the first crest created for the merged club in 1968 combined elements of both predecessors while establishing a fresh identity, featuring the figure of Fortuna to link the new club to the legacy of Fortuna ’54.[4] The badge underwent several refinements through the 1970s and 1980s while retaining the central Fortuna figure, with different artistic interpretations appearing over the years.[4]
During the 1990s, the goddess became more stylised and the shield adopted cleaner lines suited to modern football branding.[4] A significant redesign in the 2000s introduced a more contemporary interpretation, simplifying the goddess and integrating her into a cleaner shield design while making the club’s green-and-yellow colours more prominent.[4] The crest history timeline lists the current design as dating from 2014 to the present.[4]
The club’s official history notes that Fortuna ’54 played in green and white, while Sittardia played in yellow and blue.[1] The merged club adopted the green-and-yellow colours that remain central to its identity today.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The goddess Fortuna was the Roman goddess of fate and luck, often depicted with wings, a cornucopia, a sceptre and a wheel, the latter symbolising the changeability of fate.[2] The Dutch football club Fortuna Sittard is named after the goddess, and her image appears in the club’s emblem.[2]
The club’s primary colours are green and yellow, as reflected in the current crest’s sweeping bands.[4] A 2020 statement from the Fortuna SC supporters organisation noted that the original logo design uses green, yellow, black and white, confirming the standard colour scheme of the crest.[5]
Typography and Design
The club name appears in uppercase lettering on a curved white ribbon beneath the central figure, forming an integral part of the badge’s composition.[3] No specific typeface has been officially documented for the crest.
In October 2025, Fortuna Sittard presented a retro third kit featuring the club’s old logo, which was used between 1979 and 1990, as a direct reference to an iconic shirt from the 1988/1989 season.[6]
