The Ghana national football team, known as the Black Stars, is governed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The team’s visual identity is built around the black star, a symbol drawn directly from the national flag of Ghana, which also gives the team its nickname. The black star appears on the national flag, the national coat of arms, and the federation’s badge, making it the central element of Ghanaian football identity. [1]
Design and History
The Ghana national team badge features a football encircled by three thin rings in red, yellow, and green, the pan-African colours of Ghana’s flag, with a ribbon-like flag element rising in a sweeping curve that ends in a yellow panel with a small black star. [2] This design was described ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup as featuring “a football neatly encased in the pan-African colours of Ghana’s flag.” [3]
The black star itself was adopted from the flag of the Black Star Line, a shipping line incorporated by Marcus Garvey that operated from 1919 to 1922. It is from this emblem that the Ghana national football team derives its nickname, the “Black Stars.” [1] The national flag of Ghana, designed by Theodosia Okoh and adopted in 1957, features the black five-pointed star at its centre, and the team has carried this symbol on its kits since independence. [1]
On match shirts, the GFA crest and the black star are displayed as separate elements. Puma, the team’s long-time kit supplier, has positioned the GFA logo on the left chest with a bold black star at the centre of the shirt. [4] This arrangement was repeated in the 2024 kit release, which placed the Puma logo on the right side of the chest, the black star at the centre, and the GFA logo on the left. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The black star is the symbol of African emancipation. [1] The red, gold, and green colours of the flag carry specific national meanings: red represents the blood of those who died in the country’s struggle for independence from Great Britain, gold represents the mineral wealth of the country, and green symbolizes the country’s rich forests and natural wealth. [1] The coat of arms of Ghana also features a black star of Africa with a gold outline as its crest, reinforcing the star as a national emblem that extends into the football identity. [1]
Typography and Design
In 2011, Ghanaian designer Godfrey Donkor created a kit concept for Puma titled “Raining Black Stars,” which was incorporated into the national team jersey. Donkor described the concept as featuring “diagonally falling dark stars” that mirror the team in formation, protecting “the red, gold and green stars, which are the national interest.” [6] This design work demonstrates how the black star motif has been adapted into the team’s kit graphics beyond the static federation badge.
