JYP Jyväskylä is a Finnish ice hockey club based in Jyväskylä, competing in the top-tier Liiga. The club traces its origins to 1923, when it operated as the ice hockey section of the sports club Jyväskylän Palloilijat, before becoming an independent club in 1977.[1] Its visual identity centers on a hurricane symbol, a motif that has remained central through recent anniversary branding.
Design and History
The club’s primary logo features a red tornado or hurricane symbol accompanying the JYP text.[2] The club’s official colors are red, black, and white.[1]
In 2023, JYP celebrated its 100th anniversary with a new anniversary logo and new jerseys designed for the celebratory season.[3] The anniversary logo kept the current hurricane symbol but placed it within a coat-of-arms style frame.[3] Two versions of the anniversary logo were produced, with only one used on game jerseys; the other version, featuring a celebration ribbon above the logo, appeared on fan merchandise.[4]
The frame design drew from JYP’s older logos, which in turn were shaped by Jyväskylä’s earliest coats of arms.[4] The club’s sports director at the time explained that the anniversary logo was intended as a piece of the club’s 100-year history and would appear across all club functions throughout the season.[4]
The 2023 season also brought changes to the club’s home and away jersey color schemes.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The hurricane symbol has been a consistent element of JYP’s identity, described in earlier club documentation as a red tornado accompanying the JYP lettering.[2] The 2023 anniversary treatment reinforced the club’s heritage by pairing this modern symbol with a frame derived from historical club logos and the city’s early heraldry.[4]
