The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are the athletic teams of Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. The university’s athletics department maintains its own set of logos, separate from the institution’s academic marks, for identifying and promoting its teams. The “LA Tech” abbreviated name is reserved exclusively for the athletics programs, while the university as a whole uses the full name Louisiana Tech University. [1] [2]

Design and History

Louisiana Tech’s athletics visual identity was significantly overhauled in 2008. The redesign, created by Rickabaugh Graphics, a design company in Gahanna, Ohio, was adopted to enhance customer appeal and update the department’s look. [3]

The centerpiece of the 2008 update was a refined version of the “State-T,” the university’s signature mark. The logo, which features the state of Louisiana with a large “T” stretched across it, was cleaned up with less detail to allow for more consistent reproduction. [3] The university’s branding office confirms that in 2008, the State-and-T logo was updated to a more stylized version with cleaner lines. [2]

The 2008 redesign also introduced a new bulldog mark for the men’s athletic teams. According to the athletics department, the dog is unique to Tech and represents the class, discipline and competitive strength of its teams and student-athletes. [3] The bulldog logo was worn on football helmets for the first time in 2014, as an alternate to the primary State-and-T mark that had been on helmets since 1968. [4]

In 2023, Louisiana Tech Athletics unified its branding by no longer referring to most women’s sports teams as the Lady Techsters, aligning them under the Bulldogs name used for men’s teams. The Lady Techsters nickname and script logo were retained exclusively for the women’s basketball program, which athletics director Dr. Eric A. Wood described as a national brand synonymous with the team’s history. [5] [6]

Typography and Design

Alongside the State-T and bulldog marks, the 2008 redesign introduced a unique “LATECH Font.” This is not a commercially available typeface but a hand-drawn script based on the classic “T,” with every letter individually modified to fit the desired look. [3]

The official university colors are Tech Blue (PMS 287, HEX #003087) and Tech Red (PMS 1797, HEX #CB333B). [7] A lighter shade, Lady Techster Blue (PMS 292c, HEX #69B3E7), is designated for use by Louisiana Tech Athletics as a primary color. [7]
