Minor League Baseball (MiLB) is the professional baseball system of 120 teams across four classification levels (Single-A, High-A, Double-A and Triple-A) affiliated with Major League Baseball’s 30 clubs.[1] The organization has used its own league-level logo since 1999, with several significant redesigns since then.[2]
Design and History
MiLB introduced its first league logo in 1999. That design was a tall, square-shaped mark with a dome on top, featuring the words “Minor League” in the dome and “Baseball” at the bottom, with a batter surrounded by four stars in the center.[3] This logo remained in use through 2007.
In 2008, MiLB replaced it with a wider rectangular design. The new logo showed the same batter image in white, placed in the center of a rectangle divided into dark blue on the right and red on the left, with four white stars above. The words “Minor League Baseball” appeared beneath in slim blue lettering.[3] That year also marked the first time the MiLB logo appeared on the back of Minor League caps.[3]
In March 2021, MiLB tweaked its primary logo to align more closely with Major League Baseball’s iconic “Batterman” symbol. While the batter design, known as the “Prospect Icon,” remained in the center, the colors were darkened to match MLB’s palette, and the four white stars were made more prominent.[4] This update was part of the broader operational change in which MLB took over the affiliated minor league system before the 2021 season.[5]
On September 28, 2023, MiLB unveiled a fully redesigned logo representing its 14 leagues across four classification levels.[1] The modernized mark features the iconic MLB silhouetted batter design, replacing MiLB’s prior batter image, to highlight the connection between MiLB and MLB under the “MLB Player Development” league structure.[1] The redesign was orchestrated by Wieden+Kennedy, which had been named the league’s first creative agency of record in eight years, with Mother Design also involved in the process.[5] According to MLB EVP and CMO Karin Timpone, the change resulted from “an ongoing dialogue both internally as well as with our external partners that began with the operational change back in 2021,” with the goal of making the MLB-MiLB connection more obvious.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2023 logo features an angular four-star motif, reflecting both player progression through the Minor League system and the star MLB players of the future.[1] The four stars correspond to the four classification levels of full-season baseball.[6]
The red coloring from the previous logo was removed, replaced by a duo-tone blue color scheme. According to MiLB’s description, the blue palette is rooted in baseball’s heritage, with the lighter hue representing the bright futures of players on their journey, while the darker blue helps the stars shine by increasing their contrast.[7] The batter silhouette is shifted to the left of where it sits in the MLB logo, and the small baseball that appears in the MLB mark is absent from the MiLB version.[8]
Typography and Design
The 2023 redesign also slightly altered the font of the logo’s lettering.[7] The new logo began appearing on the broadcast of the Triple-A National Championship Game in late September 2023 and was incorporated across MiLB-owned media platforms and league touch points beginning Opening Day of the 2024 season.[1]
